A New Hunger Is Born

When you’ve emptied yourself…
when your heart has been broken and softened…
when your will has been surrendered…
then comes a new craving.
Not for pleasure.
Not for status.
Not even for relief.
But for righteousness—God’s righteousness.

The Kingdom Craving

Everything up to this point has cleared space. Now comes the first active pursuit.
To hunger and thirst is urgent, desperate language:

“God, I’m starving for Your holiness.”
The promise: They will be satisfied—not partially, but completely.

Word-by-Word Breakdown (Matthew 5 : 6)

  • Makarioi (μακάριοι) – “Blessed.” God’s favor, nearness, smile.
  • Hoi peinōntes (οἱ πεινῶντες) – “Those who are hungering.” Ongoing appetite.
  • Kai dipsōntes (καὶ διψῶντες) – “And thirsting.” Intensified desperation.
  • Tēn dikaiosynēn (τὴν δικαιοσύνην) – “The righteousness.” God’s justice on earth, right standing with Him, right living in His will.
  • Hoti (ὅτι) – “For / because.” Introduces the reason for blessing.
  • Autoi (αὐτοὶ) – “They themselves.” Personal, certain promise.
  • Chortasthēsontai (χορτασθήσονται) – “They shall be filled.” God does the feeding—no scraps, no leftovers.

This Holy Hunger Is a Gift

You can’t manufacture it. If you feel even a spark today, it proves God is already working in you.
The appetite is evidence of life—don’t ignore it and don’t feed it junk.

🚫 Don’t Eat Spiritual Junk Food – Guard the Appetite

Spiritual hunger dies quickest when you keep snacking on the world’s empty calories—endless scrolling, outrage news, gossip, porn, mind-numbing entertainment. Isaiah 55 : 2 asks, “Why spend your money on what isn’t bread, and your labor on what doesn’t satisfy?”

  • Junk food never fills; it only dulls desire for the banquet God spreads.
  • Every hour lost to hollow content is an hour you could have feasted on Scripture, prayer, worship, or mercy.

Quick Diagnostic – Before you click, watch, or listen, ask:

  1. Will this stir deeper walk with Jesus?
  2. Will it sharpen my mind for truth?
  3. Will it push me toward obedience and compassion?
If the answer is “no,” drop it.

Swap the Snacks

  • Replace TikTok -scrolling with a Psalm.
  • Trade background noise for five quiet minutes listening to God.
  • Exchange gossip texts for a prayer text: “How can I intercede for you right now?”

Pray It In

“Father, cleanse my palate.
Starve every counterfeit craving.
Train my taste buds for the pure, nourishing feast of Your righteousness.”

Stay hungry for what truly satisfies—the Kingdom menu is too good to waste on junk.

Let’s Go Deeper – How the Hunger Grows

  • Poor in spirit – emptied of self.
  • Mourning – heart broken over sin.
  • Meekness – reins yielded to God.
  • Hunger – aching for His righteousness to reign inside and out.

This holy hunger is the spark of revival.

Echoes in Scripture

  • Psalm 42 : 1–2 – “As the deer pants for streams of water, so my soul pants for You….”
  • Isaiah 55 : 1 – “Come, all you who are thirsty….”
  • John 6 : 35 – “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to Me shall not hunger….”

Today’s Practice – Feed the Hunger

Step 1 – Name the Craving
Ask: “Spirit, what am I truly hungry for today?”
Write down counterfeit desires that may be competing for your attention—success, comfort, revenge, approval, control, escape.
Then pray: “God, purify my appetite. Burn away what’s false.”

Step 2 – Feast on the Word
Slow down and open the Scriptures like a hungry soul at a table.
Spend ten minutes reading Psalm 1, Psalm 119:9–16, or Matthew 6:33.
Read it slowly. Let it sink in. Highlight a phrase that nourishes you. Pray it back to God.

Step 3 – Begin a Junk Food Fast
Choose one kind of spiritual junk food to cut off today. Just one.

  • Maybe it's social media scrolling.
  • Maybe it’s talk radio, political outrage, or binge-watching shows.

Declare your fast:

“Father, I’m laying this down for today—not to earn anything, but to make space for You to fill me.”

Bottom Line

Those who hunger and thirst for righteousness will be filled.
But they must first make room.

Cut the junk.
Crave the truth.
Come hungry.
God is ready to satisfy.

Pray for a Hunger for God’s Ways

“Father, give me a holy hunger for what pleases You.
Make me crave Your will, Your Word, and Your ways.”

Bottom Line – Those who hunger and thirst for righteousness will be filled—not by their own goodness, but by God’s. The Kingdom isn’t for the full; it’s for the starving. Seek first the Kingdom of God.
